Wild Rice – Manoomin

Working with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC), local schools and other organizations, WWA staff and volunteers collect ripened rice seed in the fall using traditional “soft hand” methods in a poled canoe.  This seed is then sown in areas that, through restoration and management actions, have become good candidates for rice beds to be established.

Collect rice with us in late August, early September.    Or tell us about a good candidate property for rice restoration. Let us know.

Manoomin

  • Wild rice (“manoomin” in Ojibwe) has important cultural significance to native tribes
  • Rice is an important food for migrating waterfowl.
  • For over a decade, WWA has collected wild rice for the purpose of re-establishing rice beds throughout Wisconsin.
